GAILEN LEAVES ON HIGH NOTE
Blake Gailen’s final at bat as a Barnstormer before heading to the Summer Olympics with team Israel was a meaningful one.
Gailen slammed a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning, a blast which proved to be the difference, as Lancaster defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The Lancaster first baseman/outfielder was on deck in the bottom of the eighth when Anderson De La Rosa lined out, sealing the perfect sendoff.
It was the long ball that produced most of the offense on Sunday afternoon. Caleb Gindl broke a scoreless deadlock with a controversial homer down the right field line in the bottom of the third. The blast was initially ruled foul by first base umpire Bill Reuter, but, after a conference with the other two members of the crew the call was overturned. That decision led to the ejection of Southern Maryland manager Stan Cliburn.
Alejandro De Aza added a leadoff shot in the fourth for a 2-0 lead off Sam Burton (2-4). A third Lancaster run crossed the plate on three walks and a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth.
Augie Sylk (2-1) fired six shutout innings for the Barnstormers. The left-hander allowed only three singles while walking five and striking out four.
David Harris connected for a three-run homer to left with two outs in the top of the seventh to trim the lead to 5-3. Gabriel Moya pitched a scoreless eighth for his fourth hold. Scott Shuman took over in the ninth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning for his eighth save.
The Barnstormers are off on Monday before entertaining the High Point Rockers on Tuesday. Tuesday’s game will feature a special 6:00 start with fireworks to follow.
NOTES: Melvin Mercedes injured his hand on a foul ball in the sixth but bunted his way with two strikes to set up Gailen’s homer…The bunt single extended Mercedes’ on base streak to 20…Gindl tied Gastonia’s Joshua Sale for the league lead in homers…Gailen leaves with 47 RBI, tops in the league…The homer was his 108th as a Barnstormer…Sylk has thrown 11 innings against Southern Maryland without allowing an earned run…The quality start was his first and the team’s seventh.
